The FDA, together with network partners, plans to issue a positive list of health claims, promoting the utilization of Thai functional foods and functional ingredients, and supporting the healthy food industry.
Mr.Lertchai Lertvut, Deputy Secretary-General of the Thai FDA, held a meeting with representatives from the Office of National Higher Education Science Research and Innovation Policy Council (NXPO), the Thailand Science Research and Innovation (TSRI), the Program Management Unit for Competitiveness (PMUC), the Agricultural Research Development Agency (Public Organization) (ARDA), the Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research (TISTR), and the Food Innovation & Regulation Network (FIRN) to discuss ways to support the conceptual framework for driving Thai future food industry as proposed by Dr. Sirinya Lim, Senior Director of NXPO. The goal is to achieve a total added value of 500 billion baht for the food industry by 2027. This is expected to result in various outcomes, such as pushing Thai entrepreneurs into global foodproduction chains, attracting investment in advanced technologies, increasing income for farmers, levelling up the industrial production sector which would eventually add the domestic market value and export value of Thai food products.
Furthermore, the meeting discussed plan, selection criteria, and prioritized the important foods and functional ingredients to be included in the process of creating health claims (Positive list).The goal is to add 150 items by 2027, with five items to be completed in 2024. For the fiscal year 2025, 50 more items will be added to the positive list There will be collaboration with various agencies for academic evaluation and to determine the budget framework for research funding to meet the goals and be useful in issuing regulations to promote food entrepreneurship. This will help increase trade value and contribute to Thailand’s sustainable economic growth.
