The Ministry of Public Health join hands with the partner networks from more than 30 organizations to organize “the 4th National Seminar on Antimicrobial Resistance” under the cooperation with the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, Health and Development Foundation and Mahidol-Oxford Unit, Faculty of Tropical Medicine of Mahidol University. The Seminar aims to provide the platform to exchange the academic information and share the national and the global situations on Antimicrobial Resistance. The Ministry with its partner networks is ready to drive officially the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance No. 2 B.E. 2566-2570 (2023-2027).
On 12 June 2024, H.E. Mr. Somsak Thepsutin, Minister of Public Health presided over the 4th National Seminar on Antimicrobial Resistance at Rama Gardens Hotel, Bangkok. The Seminar was attended by the high level of the Ministry of Public Health such as Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, the Permanent Secretary for Public Health and Dr. Narong Aphikulvanich, Secretary - General of Food and Drug Administration and the other Executives from the concerned agencies including Mr. Kuson Chotirat, Deputy Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of National Resources and Environment, Dr. Prapas Pinyocheep, Deputy Director General of the Department of Livestock Development, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Dr. Pairoj Saonuam, Deputy Director of the Thai Health Promotion Foundation and Asst. Prof. Dr. Niyada Kiatying-Angsulee, Chair of the Health and Development Foundation as well as the partner networks from both Thailand and the foreign countries as the co-host of such Seminar.
H.E. Mr. Somsak Thepsutin revealed that Antimicrobial Resistance: AMR was considered as health harmfulness to the people in Thailand and worldwide as it impacted human, animal, food, environment and economy. There were 1.3 million people across the world died due to AMR and it was expected that in 2050 more than 10 million people would die from such Resistance. Thailand has solved the problem of AMR since 2017 on the scheme called “One Health Approach” and it was continually implemented till the present under the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance No. 2 B.E. 2566-2570 (2023-2027). As a consequence, the organization of this Seminar aimed to carry on the determination and the leadership of Thailand in solving the problem of AMR.
Dr. Narong Aphikulvanich, the Secretary - General of Food and Drug Administration said that during the year 2017- 2022, Thailand could reduce the Antimicrobial Consumption in human to 33.6 % while in animal to 39.3% responding the goal that was set to 20% and 30% respectively. Moreover, the capacity of National AMR management system could pass the evaluation indicator of World Health Organization.
Furthermore, the highlight of the Seminar was the Special Session on the Key Priority to the Success of a Solution to the AMR problem delivered by H.E. Mr. Somsak Thepsutin and the Regional Director for World Health Organization South-East Asia Region while the other Session given by Dr. Narong Aphikulvanich, the Secretary - General of FDA was on the Challenges and Performances to the Sustainable Achievement of the Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance.
