The Thai FDA recommends that individuals of all genders and ages in Thailand use iodized salt and iodized seasoning products for consumption.
Mr. Lertchai Lertvut, the Deputy Secretary-General of the Food and Drug Administration, remarked that June 25th of every year is regarded as the “National Idoine Day”. It is now widely recognized that iodine deficiency – found in those who regularly consume food with no or little iodine – is a national public health concern. Iodine deficiency in infants can lead to incomplete brain development, decrease in intellectual capacity, disability and impaired mental development. In severe cases, it can lead to stillbirths. In adults may suffer from goiter, sluggishness, dry skin, and constipation. This is because iodine is essential for thyroid hormones that are necessary for body growth and brain and intelligence development from pregnancy onwards.
Iodine is a naturally occurring mineral found mostly in seafood. The recommended daily intake of iodine for children is approximately 90-120 micrograms, and 150 micrograms for adults. Pregnant and breastfeeding women will need a higher amount, approximately 200 micrograms. Therefore, to maintain health and prevent iodine deficiency, the Thai FDA recommends using food products fortified with iodine for cooking such as iodized salt, fish sauce, brine for cooking, and food seasoning derived from hydrolysis or fermentation of soybean protein.
The Deputy Secretary-General encourages consumers to recognize the importance of iodine by purchasing and using iodized salt or iodized seasoning products. Consumers can identify food products fortified with iodine from the product labels. The label should clearly display the name and address of the manufacturer and the food serial number approved by the FDA. Despite its importance, food products fortified with iodine should be used to enhance the taste of food only, do not use in large amounts, as it can have adverse effects on health.
