The FDA warns that "magic mushrooms" are classified as a narcotic plant that causes intoxication, delirium, and hallucinations. Users face imprisonment, while producers, importers, exporters, sellers, or possessors may face both imprisonment and fines.
Dr. Withid Sariddeechaikool, Deputy Secretary-General of the Food and Drug Administration, revealed that a British tourist has died due to consumed mushrooms suspected to be magic mushrooms and suffered a fatal shock at a resort in Mae Rim District, Chiang Mai, Thailand. The family was suspicious of the cause of death. Investigators from the Police Region 5 discovered that the deceased bought the mushrooms from a shop in the Tha Phae Road area. Authorities conducted a sting operation and arrested the suspects. Preliminary findings suggest that the item was likely to be magic mushrooms. The suspicious mushrooms from the store have been sent to the Chiang Mai Medical Science Centre for analysis, while the cause of death of the tourist is still under investigation.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is concerned about this matter because magic mushrooms contain the psychoactive substance called psilocybin. When consumed, it can cause intoxication, delirium, nausea, vomiting, hallucinations, and visual distortions. Users often need to increase the dosage over time.
In Thailand, magic mushrooms are classified as a category 5 narcotic substance. Users face imprisonment for up to 1 year or a fine of up to 20,000 baht, or both imprisonment and fines. Those who produce, import, export, sell, or possess them without permission face up to 5 years in prison and a fine of up to 500,000 baht. If the offense involves commercial intent or distribution to the public, the penalty is 1 to 15 years in prison and a fine ranging from 100,000 to 1,500,000 baht. Psilocybin is a Category 1 Controlled Psychotropic Substances, with no medical uses and a high potential for abuse.
Dr. Withid emphasized the importance of caution, warning consumers not to be deceived, as violating the law could be dangerous and even life-threatening.
