Responding to the growing preventive health trend, the Thai Food and Drug Administration (Thai FDA) has announced the addition of five probiotic strains with internationally recognized scientific evidence to the approved list for use in food. Business operators can immediately apply these strains in the development of new products, while supporting Thailand’s ambition to become a leader in the green economy through safe food innovation.
Ms. Supatra Boonserm, Secretary-General of the Food and Drug Administration, revealed that the Thai FDA has issued the Notification on Criteria and Guidelines for the Use of Probiotic Microorganisms in Food (No. 2), adding five probiotic strains that are supported by internationally recognized research on safety and efficacy. The measure is intended to facilitate and accelerate the development of health food products by business operators, while responding to the needs of modern consumers who place greater emphasis on health care. The five additional probiotic strains are as follows:
1. Bacillus subtilis strain DE111
2. Lacticaseibacillus casei strain Shirota
3. Lacticaseibacillus casei strain DN-114001
4. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum strain 299V
5. Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris strain FC
The inclusion of these probiotic strains will help reduce the documentary burden associated with proving safety, thereby shortening the time required and lowering the costs involved. It will also expand opportunities for the development of health food innovation that meets the needs of modern consumers, increase the range of healthy food products available on the market, and strengthen consumer confidence in product safety. In addition, this move will help elevate Thailand’s food industry to become more competitive in the global market in line with the green economy approach, which emphasizes sustainability.
The Thai FDA reaffirmed its commitment to continuously modernizing the regulatory system to make it more transparent and supportive of business growth, while maintaining strong consumer protection, in order to drive the country’s health economy sustainably.
