Thai FDA Clarified Four Notifications of Ministry of Public Health to Food Entrepreneurs

Thai FDA organized a meeting with food entrepreneurs to prepare for the improvement/modification of the nutrition labels to be in accordance with 4 new Notifications of Ministry of Public Health which will be effective from July 2, 2024 onwards.

Dr. Narong Aphikulvanich, Secretary-General of the Food and Drug Administration, revealed that the Ministry of Public Health had issued 4 Notifications of the Ministry of Public Health, issued by virtue of the Food Act B.E. 2522, which are: Notification of Ministry of Public Health (No. 445) B.E. 2566 (2023) Re: Nutrition Labels; Notification of Ministry of Public Health (No. 446) B.E. 2566 (2023) Re: Food Products Required to Bear Nutrition Labelling and Guideline Daily Amounts, GDA Labelling (No.2); Notification of Ministry of Public Health (No. 447) B.E. 2566 (2023) Re: Health Claims made on Food Labelling; and Notification of Ministry of Public Health (No. 448) B.E. 2566 (2023) Re: Food Supplements (No. 5). The aforementioned notifications were published in the Royal Gazette on January 4, 2024, and will be effective from July 2, 2024 onwards, with the exemption period for food manufacturers or importers that foods having nutrition labels or health claims made, or food supplements containing vitamin and minerals permitted prior to the Notifications becoming effective can still be sold, but no later than July 1, 2027.

On February 14, 2024, the Thai FDA arranged the meeting with the food entrepreneurs and all parties concerned to establish mutual understanding among food manufacturers and importers to prepare for the improvement/modification of food supplement formulas and labels, nutrition labels and GDA labels, as well as health claims to be in accordance with the new notifications. The Q&A session was also conducted for clarification and to ensure that the operation can be done in a timely manner. The Secretary-General further stated that the improvement/modification will make the display of the claims and nutrition labels clear, contributing to safe product development based on latest academic information, which helps ensure that the products are safe for consumers. The improvement/modification of labels will make it easier for consumers to understand and compare nutrition facts and nutrient content, enabling them to buy the products that are proper for their own health care.
