FDA Seek Public Opinion on Surveillance Measure for Imported Fresh Vegetables and Fruits

FDA is pushing forward with strict surveillance and regulatory policies to inspect pesticide residues in fresh vegetables and fruits in accordance with the “Hold Test Release” measures, which detain imported produce that does not meet standards to prevent it from being sold domestically and the concept of “1DAAN/1LAB/1DAY” which aims to facilitate importers by providing test results within one day. . The implementation to optimize such measure was conducted through the collaboration with the network partners such as embassies, entrepreneurs, food business association, and consumers organizations  to strengthen the economy, enable businesses to operate conveniently and quickly, and ensure consumer safety.

Mr. Lertchai Lertvut, Deputy Secretary-General of FDA joined the meeting with network partners on 9 July 2024, at the Miracle Grand Convention Hotel in Bangkok The meeting was aimed to gather feedback on rules, regulations, and practices of FDA's Import and Export Inspection Division. When importing fresh fruits and vegetables with high pesticide residue risks from sources with a history of substandard production, these items will be detained and randomly tested for pesticide residues. Test results will be available within one day. If no residues are found or if they are within legally permissible limits, the products will be allowed for sale. This measure will be applied to the risk group of fresh vegetables and fruits, providing thorough consumer protection while facilitating importers. This meeting aimed to strengthen collaboration and exchange views among relevant sectors to develop collaborative practices. The feedback received will be used to improve and enhance the efficiency of measures, ensuring that consumers receive imported vegetables and fruits that meet standards and safety requirements without hindering or conflicting with international trade agreement.

The Deputy Secretary-General of FDA concluded that FDA’s operations are based on international standards and play a role in building consumer confidence, fostering understanding, and emphasizing transparency for importers. The FDA also aims to strengthening consumer protection efforts in collaboration with its partners to ensure public safety and facilitating the business operation.
